Synopsis

Cherelle broke with her roots and reinvented herself from scratch in Quebec where she leads a successful life. She is a recognized professional, her life is a model for many. Everything seems placed. Foreseen. Serene. Cherelle has a son Raphaël whom she adores. But he likes to party a little too much. A lifestyle which inevitably creates tensions with his mother and will lead Raphaël into a series of rather uncertain couch surfs.

When she must call upon buried resources from the past to rescue her son from the clutches of the streets, it becomes apparent that Cherelle has already fought even fiercer battles in her homeland. This unsuspected baggage impresses the son, and leads to a pas de deux between mother and son. The pieta. But funny.

Where this all started

Our story comes from the perspective of activist, singer, lawyer and mother Stéphane Moraille, and her experience as a professional, mother and Afro-descendant woman. Once the beginning of the story has been found, she will tell it to producer Serge Noël as part of their professional collaboration. This is what will be the basis of the current project, to which Bachir Bensaddek joins as screenwriter, a long-time acquaintance of Stéphane, and Maria Camila Arias as expert consultant, who in addition to sharing with Stéphane the perspective of an immigrant and a mother on the subject, is a contributor to Possibles Média.

Intent

Through its comic tone, “My mother is looking for me” depicts the adventures of a woman whose exuberant actions will surprise the audience. Not unrelated to the film 'True Lies', and not as harsh as the Quebec series "Happily Married", our film nevertheless shares similar themes... it features a seemingly harmless character who proves to be more than capable at facing dangerous situations, and save what is dear to them!

Comedy often relies on contrasts, and a dramatic base which serves as a foundation. Here, the distance between generations, accentuated by the challenges of immigration, the universal desire of parents to see their children escape the dangers they faced in the past, all this offers very fertile ground for humor and reflection on family prejudices and misunderstandings.

The scenario of “My mother is looking for me” therefore explores intergenerational relations within immigrant families. It highlights the dynamics between generations, accentuated by the realities of immigration, where children can often find themselves in the role of cultural mediators between their parents and the host society. This comedy therefore plays on the generation gap, exacerbated by uprooting, and is based on the clear comic springs of police comedy.
